Taipower uses GridVerix® to support safer renewable integration

Taipower partnered with Reactive Technologies to gain real-time visibility of system inertia across Taiwan’s grid, supporting data-driven decisions as renewable penetration increases and the power system becomes more dynamic.

The challenges

Taiwan’s power system is undergoing a major transition as more renewable energy is integrated into the grid. As conventional fossil-fuel generation is displaced by wind and solar, system inertia, traditionally provided by rotating turbines becomes harder to assess and manage.

For Taipower, the challenge was not only to maintain grid reliability today, but to prepare for a future system with significantly higher renewable penetration. Although renewables accounted for around 12% of Taiwan’s electricity mix in 2025, Taipower is working toward a long-term target of 60–70% renewable generation by 2050. This created a clear need for better visibility of real system behaviour, so planning and operational decisions could be based on measured data rather than conservative assumptions.

The solution

Reactive Technologies’ GridVerix® platform, formerly known as GridMetrix®, was deployed to provide real-time inertia measurement across Taipower’s power network.

With 10 of our measurement devices XMUs deployed on the network, the project built on an existing relationship between Taipower and Reactive Technologies, following earlier work on frequency monitoring and spot inertia measurement. In this phase, Taipower used GridVerix to measure inertia across the whole Taiwan grid and improve visibility of the system’s real stability characteristics.

The project was also notable globally because Taipower became one of the first grid operators to use a battery energy storage system as a modulator for active, real-time inertia measurement.

The outcomes

The project gave Taipower measured evidence that Taiwan’s grid can integrate more renewable energy safely and efficiently. By improving visibility of real system behaviour, Taipower can make smarter, data-driven decisions about renewable integration, system planning and future grid operations.

A global innovation milestone

Taipower became one of the first grid operators globally to use a BESS as a modulator for active real-time inertia measurement.

Next phase: inertia forecasting

The project will progress toward AI and machine learning-based day-ahead inertia forecasting, helping Taipower plan and operate more proactively.
