Job description: The main role of the Principal Power Systems Engineer is to support the ongoing business growth through technical project leadership whilst investigating and implementing new technologies relating to power system monitoring and operations. The Principal Power Systems Engineer will often act as an interface between TSOs/DNOs and Reactive’s development team, ensuring that products and services are relevant and valuable to our customers. This will involve maintaining relationships with TSOs/DNOs, understanding their requirements and effectively communicating and prioritising customer features.   


  • As the principle lead on multiple global projects, be responsible for the technical project scope, elements of solution architecture, technical deliverables and ensure the highest quality for our customers
  • Support customers and the sales team by describing technical content (including, but not limited to design of physical connectivity of Reactive’s equipment to the customer’s assets) and driving sale conversion by earning technical trust with the customer – you need to ‘speak their language’ and understand their pain points to suggest and provide valuable solutions 
  • Support Project Managers in project costing, scoping decisions and translating customer technical requirements into actionable work items  
  • Help identify and mitigate project delivery risks.  
  • Support proposal development and management reporting.  
  • Support new product development by applying power systems modelling, signal processing, and/or machine learning and analysis techniques.  
  • Work closely with R&D and Operational functions to ensure new and existing products can be fully delivered.  

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Required Skills

  • Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment without constant supervision. Exhibits personal drive, and be highly innovative in your thinking.  
  • Deep technical knowledge of power system challenges and ongoing solutions globally.    
  • Ability to reduce complexity into key, scalable requirements and to communicate effectively both in internal and external contexts and at all levels within organisations.    
  • Able to wear both technical and commercial ‘hats’, experience of techno-economic assessments.    
  • Experience in scoping, delivery or operation of Grid, Utility or Energy Services. 

Desirable Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • PhD in electrical engineering with an emphasis on power systems with 4+ years of experience or Master’s degree with 7+ years experience 
  • Knowledgeable in power system issues and phenomena occuring/developing as a result of the transition to net zero and the increased integration of renewable energy sources to the grid, e.g. oscillations, low inertia, high ROCOF, system strength challenges, etc. 
  • Experience in a research and development environment/role is a plus 
  • Background and/or knowledge of PMUs and WAMS is a plus 
  • Background and/or knowledge of power quality meters and SCADA protocols such as IEC 61850-9-2 is a plus 
  • Experience in costing and tendering response related work 
  • Experience in presenting technical content in conferences 
  • Experience in a client-facing role in addition to any operational roles  
  • Knowledge of smart grid technologies from a DSO or TSO environment
