Measure First, Then Manage: Grid Inertia in the Energy Transition12 August 2025
Grid inertia sits at the heart of the energy transition challenge. As renewable energy penetration increases, maintaining grid stability becomes more complex, especially for island nations like Taiwan, where the absence of interconnected inertia demands self-sustaining solutions.
In an interview with EnergyOmni, a Taiwan-based media platform dedicated to sustainable energy and Net Zero, our Chief Operating Officer Chris Kimmett shared insights from our ongoing grid inertia measurement project with Taipower. He emphasized the importance of understanding the physics of the grid before attempting to manage it. He also shared our collaboration with NESO of UK with positive impact on the Net Zero journey. Taipower’s early adoption of the technology will build a strong foundation for its energy future.
Using vivid metaphors, Chris compared traditional grids to steam locomotives, heavy, stable, and slow to change, while modern grids resemble motorcycles, agile but sensitive to disruption. This shift from heavy to light gyroscopes illustrates the growing challenge of maintaining stability in a low-inertia environment.
“The key? Measure first, then manage.”
Accurate, real-time measurement is the foundation for managing future grid systems. Enabling informed decision-making, better forecasting and robust scenario planning
That is where innovative solutions like RTL’s GridMetrix® come in, delivering precise grid inertia data to support resilient, secure, and sustainable power systems.
